About Mafia Island

Mafia Island is Tanzania's best-kept secret — a pristine marine paradise that remains blissfully undeveloped compared to Zanzibar. Located in the Indian Ocean south of Dar es Salaam, this 394 square kilometer island and its surrounding archipelago are home to the Mafia Island Marine Park, the largest marine protected area in the Indian Ocean.

The crystal-clear waters surrounding Mafia are teeming with life. Between October and March, whale sharks — the world's largest fish — gather in the waters off the south coast, offering one of the planet's most reliable and ethical whale shark swimming experiences. The coral reefs are among the healthiest in East Africa, hosting over 400 species of fish and five species of sea turtle.

Above the water, Mafia offers a glimpse of authentic Swahili coastal life. Small fishing villages, coconut palm-lined beaches, and ancient ruins from the Shirazi era create a cultural richness that complements the marine wonders. The pace of life is wonderfully slow — this is a place to disconnect, dive deep, and discover a side of Tanzania few travelers ever see.

For travelers seeking an off-the-beaten-path beach experience combined with world-class marine encounters, Mafia Island is unmatched.
